My hair is long and straight - where it isn't grey. But the grey is wiry and curly. So the overall look is now frizzy. Thus the need to cut it shorter to let the grey and non grey find a happy mix of "wavy". I'm not looking forward to this move, but the grey is starting to win, so what else can I do? I think that is why women with greying hair in their 40s find the need for a hairstyle change that is shorter.

More important than length the hairstyle (at any age) should be based on the woman's personality and characteristics. I am well into my forties with long blond hair and this is a part of me that defines who I am ... a couple of years ago I colored my hair dark and had it over my shoulders and it aged me at least 5 years!

I am a 40 year old woman who loves Short hair on other people but on me, YUCK!! I just recently cut my hair very short so it could repair itself. It was the worst mistake I have ever made. To me short hair in a woman over 40 just makes her look older. To say woman over 55 or 60 usually have short hair would be better. However, my hair is growing back much thicker than ever before. Now if it would Only hit my shoulders again... I dream the words "grow, grow, grow" every night but it doesnt seem to work. Nothing grows slower than a haircut you hate!

I am 56 yrs old I have long hair , my 36 daughter doesn't like it and says I should get a shorter cut to match my age. I had it trimmed a month ago , But she said it should be cut straight across in the back not come down to a point like it did. But she is still not happy. And because of how my hair is. I am miss alot of my 7 &11 yr old granddaughters events. She says she is ashamed of me. I don't have the money like she does to get my hair done, and my nails like she does. And I can't wear the nice clothes like she does. I always wanted long hair when I was in my 30's and it wouldn't grow. I stopped changing the color 6 yrs ago. She was born natural blonde but changed her color to brown. I don't like hers but I can't say anything to her. Does anyone have the right to tell how to wear my hair. I am at the age I should be able to look and dress like I want. She a beautiful girl, she was born early but you would never know now, she has thunder thighs but I don't tell that. I think she is yust being mean, and hateful. And maybe just doesn't want me around anymore. My niece always ask me why I don't smile in pictures too, I just don't have one. My mouth turns down on the sides and it just doesn't look right when I try and smile. My daughter, my grandchildren, niece's all have the perfect smile. Why can't they just except me for me.

Hello Nancy,

Thank you for leaving your comment. Yes there is a site online that provides you with a good selection. The site provides both a free and paid version. I personally have the paid version and we use it often in making hairstyle decisions.

We use and recommend <a href="http://www.shareasale.com/r.cfm?B=15440&U=253636&M=4421" rel="nofollow">The HairStyler</a>

We always advise that if you need a photo of yourself, simply use your mobile telephone camera and upload that photo. You can then choose the right photo if you take a few of yourself. You can choose the hairstyle, colour and cut that will be right for you and you can print the photo or download the photo for further use.

I have salt and pepper hair with quite grey/silver at the front (which I like) but at the moment I don't know what I want to do with it as it is now quite long and until I decide I won't do anything. I have looked through some books at the hairdressers but none grab me. Is there a site online that gives a good selection for over 50's. I am a very busy person so need something easily managed.

I do not understand why women over 40 should have to change there Hair style. If they are comfortable with they way it looks why can it not stay long. Is thera a rule that I have missed about long hair being a no no for women over 40?

IMO, Short hair makes her more fabulous as Emma said but it also makes sense to have some color effects. Like Garnier has series of colors for 40+ aged peoples.
