Hairstyles for women over 40 and haircuts for women on the go range from colored hairstyles, Italian haircut for women, haircuts for older women and new hairstyles for women set by today’s fashion trends.

The women living life in her forties truly becomes a trend setter when it comes to the fashionable women over 40 hairstyles that she desires.

The 40’s women is often very busy either working her career, running a business or running a very busy household with demanding teenagers and time schedules.

Through the ages of twenty to forty the woman is settling into and progressing through life with her career and the growth of her family.

40 has always been a tricky age for women.  Not young, and yet not old, occupying an unpleasant middle ground during which they could be seen as either pretending youth or acting old before their time.

40 is an age of flagging confidence and uncertainty, and it’s often reflected in the hairstyles for women over 40.  They begin to give up the long, flowing locks of their youth and opt for shorter, more conservative looks.

An unlucky few begin to experience the thinning hair symptomatic of the menopause, and an extremely unlucky few even begin to see bald patches (though baldness is rarely permanent, and often a symptom of a hormonal imbalance or unusual levels of stress).

Just because a woman is beginning to leave her youth, though, that doesn’t necessarily mean that she has to give up the long hair she wore as a younger woman.  Long, flowing hair is perfectly acceptable.  It just needs to be well managed to keep it looking great.

It is for this reason that the women over 40 chooses a hairstyle that will fit in with her demanding schedule that suits her lifestyle. Her women over 40 hairstyles needs to be suitable for work and socializing with her peers and friends.

The 40’s woman will often opt for a shorter style of hair as opposed to the high maintenance of longer hair and the demands on the woman’s time to maintain her long hair style. At times when a woman enters her 40’s she will find that her hair is thinning and starting to take on grey roots where they once did not appear.

Women Over 40 Hairstyles Long To Short

Short cut hairstyles for the women in her 40’s allows her to keep up with a color maintenance program where the roots of her hair are dyed to remove the gray coloring. Short style haircuts is less demanding to maintain than longer or middle length hair and this provides the woman valuable time better spent elsewhere.

women over 40 hairstylesThe main reason why a woman over her 40’s prefers a shorter style haircut comes down to time management, easier to maintain and more cost effective then longer hairstyles. When considering your hairstyle take into account the shape of your face and the colour of your skin.

Not only that but it is an unfortunate stage of life where you may have some middle age spread that might be accentuated by one style of haircut. Speaking with your friends and asking them their opinion will help you to narrow down the style of haircut you will choose.

If you’re looking for hairstyles for women over 40 you should know that anything goes, just as it did when you were younger, but unless you want to look like someone desperately clinging onto her youth or a woman hobbling her way to the retirement home you should follow these simple tips.

  • Go for a ‘warm’ tone

Ash blonde can look great on a twenty-something with clean, tanned skin, but on older women it usually doesn’t work.  A cool hair tone can wash out pale skin, and ash blonde, in particular, can easily be mistaken for grey on a woman in her forties.   Not really the message you’re trying to put across.

Instead, bring out a youthful complexion with a warmer tone.  Reds, browns and golden blondes will take a decade off your face when done right.

  • Don’t go too long

Long hair is fine for the over 40s, but many older women find that long locks are prematurely ageing.  For an instant facelift you might think about a short pixie cut or just a quick trim.  Shorter hair draws attention away from problem areas such as the neck, and a quick cut can give you back the defined jawline of your youth.

  • Go for a bob

The old standby hairstyles for women over 40 are surely led by the mid-length bob.  This simple, clean, easy to style cut is an age old classic, worn by everyone from college students to Julie Christie, a woman in her late 60s.  Simply trim the hair to somewhere between the base of the neck and the jawline, cut in a few choppy layers and style as you like.  The bob can be worn either formal, with the help of hair straighteners, or messy, with the help of curling tongs, a little mousse or, hell, a little bed head.

The bob has something of a reputation as an ‘old lady’ hairstyle, but the truth is that it depends how you wear it.  Add a little colour, mess it up a little and throw in a bag of attitude and you’ll look ten years younger.  Moon around the place pining for your lost youth and you’ll look a decade or two older.  It’s all about attitude.

  • Volumise!

Finally, if you’re over 40 and beginning to see the first of those greys you’ll know that it isn’t just the colour that changes with age.  As hair turns grey it also tends to become more coarse, and not so easily manageable.  With the extra time it takes to tame your locks many older women might be tempted to give up and chop it off, but if you’re determined to keep hold of your long hair you need to fight for it.

Volumising products that bulk up the hair shaft are perfect for maintaining hairstyles for women over 40.  They make hair appear thicker and fuller, and as an added benefit they make it much more manageable, too.

Choose Wisely, and Look Great

As you can see, provided you think carefully and pick a style that suits your face shape and complexion there’s no reason at all that you can’t look stunning at 40 and beyond.  It may not be quite as simple as it was back when you could get out of bed and look great, but with a little effort you can improve with age.  A little confidence and the right styling is all it takes!

Exploring the different types of hairstyles for women over 40.
  1. Tom

I was stunned to hear that Madonna hit the big ‘5-oh’ recently, and amazed as usual how good she looked with long hair. So maybe this is a case where ‘the exception proves the rule’ ie maybe a woman has to have the kind of time to attend to her appearance that Madonna does, in order to really pull off long hair into her 50’s!
    Keep up the good work!

  2. Laarni

I think when reached 40, I am going to have a short hair, as well, but it should be sexxxxaaay. :p

  3. Gina Sale

Nice post, you have right. Women over 40 tend to have short hair styles for many reasons, and you have written almost all.
Women over 40 that have long hair, also have much free time for styling and making, as it is more needed then at young stage.

  4. Nat

I agree with Gina because having longer hair does take some time to manage. I went short styled and it made my life that little bit easier.

  5. Diana

I am almost 47 and still have long hair. I wash and style it only twice a week and can do many things with it. It is healthy and I’m just starting to get the odd grey hairs. I’ve asked my friends about the length but they all love it on me. If and when I have it shorter it will definately be a Bob.

  6. Stan James

I have never really been a fan of short hair on women but some of those styles do not look all that bad in all honesty.

  7. Beauty Items

I also observed that almost all women on age 40’s have shorter hair. Personally, i think it really look nice and i suggest that they need to look for products to maintain it.

  8. Julie

My MIL is in her 50’s and from the back looks about 18 with her long hair, it just doesn’t suit her anymore. I’ve told her she’d probably love a more managable style that is better suited for her age but she has yet to take my advice.

  10. Sarah

The short hair is sexier on the women i that age, but hair with style 🙂 someday I’ll be 40, and guys will still run around me 😀

  11. Karen

I think it depends on the woman. I think long hair on older women can still look great, and I know my husband likes me with longer hair no matter what. 🙂

  12. Martha Hughes

I think it all depends upon the head of hair you have. If it’s healthy and in good condition why not wear it long. Plenty of my friends still have the thick head of hair well past menopause and they look good in long hair.

  13. Tina Thompson

Nice site, very clean, lots of content and loved having a look.

  14. angeltinks

I’m 47, with long auburn hair almost to my waist. Its as thick as it ever was, no grey hairs and everyone says it looks good BUT I do tend to wear it up in a bun, french roll or ponytail in summer…..I can’t imagine cutting it. I will be one of those old ladies with 50 cats and hair plaited down to her ankles I guess.

  15. nancy thomas

i am 42 yrs. old & ive got long hair & i want a hair cut that wont take my length away ,is there such a cut out there that will help me with this. i always wear it in a bun or pony tail & i would like to have some kind of style to it.. PLEASE HELP..!!

  16. Carpet Cleaners NY

In my own observation, women around 40 with short hair look neat and elegant. For sure, many people will adore them because they still have what it takes to be called beautiful.

  17. sandra

I am 60. I like to have length in my hair as I have an inverted triangle face shape. It has a natural curl and is coloured lighter than my natural shade which is salt and pepper. I’d like to make the curl come out more, so should I have it layered or what cut should I have? Thanks, Sandra.

  18. Hello Sandra

Depending on how curly your hair is generally layering and taking the weight off will give you the desired effect. You mentioned you have lightened your hair which means it is more porous than natural hair. So using a good quality moisturiser enhances curl. Take a pic to your hairdresser as to what shape you like your hair to sit.

Thanks to our resident hairstylist – Jacki

  19. Tracy

There are some nice styles here. I do not know about others but I have noticed that the texture of my hair is changing as I get older.

  20. Nory

I am 42 and I wear short hair not because I’m over 40. I have thin and soft hair, so short hair makes me easier to manage when I wash my hair every day. My friends love me in long hair style though.

  21. pattijon

I’m turning 45 next month and have been covering the grey for years… natural color is medium to dark brown… How do you stop coloring your hair and let it go grey without looking horrible ?

  22. SF

I am 52. Some are high-lighting and low-lighting with multicolor to camo the gray/white hair. I have tried this and really hate it. It looks like a designer dog… (mutt)and I lose all the body I get with the dyes and highlighting. I wear medium length hair and have thought many times I just wanted to take the plung and cut my hair really short and let my gray/white hair (‘crown of glory’)shine. We (50-somethings) do resist growing old gracefully!

  23. Rose

Nancy Thomas could possible try layering after finding a great stylist. Don’t be afraid of a male stylist they generaly are very good.

  24. paula pruitt

i have extremely red hair of corse colored lol, intense red, i have olive skin, small features im short 5ftim 56 i get lots of compliments about my hair from men and women, i love it i look much older with longer hair, good sight here

  25. Dawn

I am 47 and have had to colour my hair for over a decade thanks for that DNA. I have always had at least shoulder length hair since my teens and I’m not about to change it now. The secret is to keep your style up to date and your hair in great condition. We don’t wear stretchy waist pants, aprons, etc. In our 40’s and still hot!

  26. Jasmine

    nice advice Dawn…!

  27. fred

trust me…men love long hair…bob hair cut is nightmare to men…it’s chopping off your femininity…asian women put hair up in a bun during day…and let it down at night…oh how beautiful

  28. Karen

I have looked at many, many hairstyles to decide how I may change mine, however, I wear eyeglasses all the time, stopped wearing contact lenses long ago. The styles I have seen are mainly women without eyeglasses. Maybe wearing sunglasses, but the style will not look the same as everyday eyewear. I’ve tried websites that you can upload your own picture to try out hairstyles. Where can I find hairstyle pictures with women wearing everyday eyeglasses? Any ideas otherwise?

  29. Joyce

I am 50. I love my hair long. It is thick and wavy. but try having a hot flash when you are wearing a scarf!! That is why I have short hair! It is just more comfortable. besides, I have been told that I look younger with short hair.

  30. Young 44

I’m 44 and have shoulder length hair. I wear it this way for a couple reasons: 1. I like longer hair. 2. I have curly hair and hate the way it styles when it’s short. 3. My boyfriend prefers longer hair. He comes from the west coast where short hair usually, especially in younger women, denotes a certain preference.

  31. Fat Loss 4 Idiots

I’ve really enjoyed reading your articles. You obviously know what you are talking about! Your site is so easy to navigate too, I’ve bookmarked it in my favourites 😀

  32. Roberta

I’m in my 40s and I have long hair. Who says you can’t have long hair after 30? In fact I’m even getting a spiral perm for the holidays -so much easier to maintain and so cute!

  33. Your site is superb I will have to read it all, thank you for the diversion from the books!

  34. Annita Chalk

I am 68, and decided to let my hair grow out from the auburn I had coloured it for 40 years – and now I have white around my face, about 4 inches deep with grey, white etc for the rest. I have a few blonde highlights to tone it but other than that – it has started to wave, is thick with new hair growing around the hairline and everyone tells me it looks fantastic. Has never been in better condition. Current style is a bob around the face with shaping up at the back.

  35. Interesting article.I really liked reading it.I am 26 years old & this article has given me an idea of having my hairs short & stylish in my old age to look younger. The best thing in your post is the simple ,easy mode of communicating ideas with people. You actually know what you want to say,i really liked it.

  36. These are very nice tips that I will try out, I am glad I ran into it. Thanks.

  37. I love the new look of your blog. It is such an improvement on the last theme you have had. I also noticed you updated a lot of the posts. Was that after talking to me in the salon?

For anyone else, if you are looking for a great hair style always trust your hair stylist. I have been going to the same one for the past 11 years. Haven’t I Terry, cu soon.

    Guess who:)

  38. From a man’s perspective, i love to see a mature woman with a stylish and sexy haircut. It doesn’t have to be long, maybe shoulder length or slightly shorter. Very short or bob cuts just does not work on most mature women. A good stylist is very important!

  39. Tina

I’ve asked several friends, both sexes, for their opion. The responses all had a common theme, “Women turn forty, shorten their hair and increase their bottom size.” Judging by the majority of overweight -short -haired women we see in our city, I can’t argue their view point. I say, keep your hair and your efforts to take care of your body. Obviously there will be exceptions in a crowd, but not the majority of females.

  40. al

The real women in this world keep their hair long until they die. But those English feminists become lazy and very un-feminine. That’s why no one wants to look at them, lol.

  41. lynda

i’m 57 with hair about mid back length which i intend to let grow as long as i want,i don’t see how anyone has any say in how women wear their hair it’s their decision and should stay that way.

  42. I’m really inspired with your writing skills and also with the structure in your blog. Is this a paid subject or did you customize it your self? Either way stay up the excellent high quality writing, it is rare to peer a nice weblog like this one today..
