Bad Hair To Good Hair – Full-On Frizz – Greasy Roots
Problem: Full-On Frizz
Cause:
A vigorous drying and brushing routine can distress the hair shaft and result in frazzled cuticles and frizz.
Prevention:
Treat your hair with respect. Before blow-drying, smooth a defrizzing, heat-protecting mousse or serum over the hair, from a quarter of the way down the shaft to the tips. Use a diffuser on a warm (not hot) setting and hold it at least an inch away from your hair. Swap your brush for a wide-toothed comb and, once a week, let your hair dry naturally and boost the moisture levels with a leave-in conditioner.
Quick Fix:
Dampen your hair with a fine mist of water, hang your head under the hand dryer in the loo until it’s almost dry and then smooth or spray on a little serum. If it’s really out of hand, tie it back or, if you have shorter hair, slick it back behind the ears, using some gel.
Tip
Look for ‘anti-humectant’ on the label – this prevents humid air from getting into hair and causing frizz.

Problem: Greasy Roots
Cause:
The wrong technique and the wrong products, coupled with a lack of time.
Prevention:
If greasy roots are a recurring problem, then you need to review your product and your routine. Is your shampoo right for your hair? If it’s too rich, you may not be rinsing properly. When shampooing, pay special attention to the areas that get most oily – usually the crown – and rinse thoroughly. Don’t put conditioner on the roots and touch your hair as little as possible, to avoid spreading grease further.
Quick Fix:
If you don’t have time to wash your hair, cheat. A sprinkle of talc on the roots will absorb oil. Massage it in and then gently brush out. Better still, use hair powder or dry shampoo – these are specially designed to disguise greasy roots and often come in hair colours, like brown and black.
Tip
When blow-drying, use the cool setting. Hot settings stimulate oil production and make roots even greasier.
